The vintage for 2019 was quite hot with various peaks and heatwaves, making it difficult to bring in grapes with lower alcohol. Thankfully these Grenache grapes are sourced from the “La Cometa” vineyard in the village of Porrera comprised of large-segment llicorella slate at an altitude of 350m. The vines average 30 years of age and are trellised.
Grapes were harvested on 20 September and fermented in stainless steel with half destemmed and half full cluster with 30mg/l of SO2 initially added but all fermentation took place via ambient yeasts. It was pressed on 06 October and, after a single tank transfer was bottled in May, 2020.
Prior to pressing and bottling however, there was an additional foot stomp by a girl from Mykolaiv near Kherson, Ukraine, thus it was “touched by the east” (tocat per l’est). Because of this connection and the Russian invasion in Ukraine, all proceeds go to benefit Ukrainian aid groups.
